Book Review: The Forgotten Affairs Of Youth

THE FORGOTTEN AFFAIRS OF YOUTH by Alexander McCall Smith is another in the Isabel Dalhousie series. Isabel is a philosopher, and owner/editor of The Review of Applied Ethics. She is also quirky and wise,an amateur detective, a mother to little Charlie, and partner to James, who is a musician.Once again trouble threatens her idyllic life. Trouble with her niece, Cat, who owns a delicatessen, and is very touchy about things. Her old sparring partner Professor Lettuce, once again tries to stir things up in his inimitable underhanded fashion. Jane, a philosopher from Australia, looking for her birth father, asks Isabel to put her detecting skills to work. Her housekeeper Grace is involved with spiritualists who give financial advice. Throughout it all, Isabel shows love and compassion, and looks deeply into the tricky questions of life.

I am honestly amazed at how a man can write a woman character so convincingly. His love of Scotland and people in general shines through.
